The Camera Man (Part 1 of 2)

Author: T Howell

Jade rushed through the automatic doors and crashed into her mother’s room.

“Mom!” Her face streamed with tears as she rushed to sit on her mother’s bed and held her hand tightly. She glanced desperately at the computer screen. Her heart rate is falling.

“It's all going to be alright, Mom. Just keep looking at me!” Jade cried, terrified. But her mother only smiled and closed her eyes, whispering, “I love you, Jade.” Her head lolled to one side, and the grip on Jade’s hand loosened, as if in a quiet, peaceful sleep, but the room echoed with a long single beep.

“Jade! Wake up!” Mom, don't leave… “Jade you got to get up now, it's late!” No Mom please… “WAKE UP JADE!”

Jade jumped and sat up, rubbing her eyes. The sun was shining through the silk white curtains, as if signalling the start of a new day, nearly blinding her. She was on her bed. She must've had a bad dream.

Suddenly, a bright flash was seen, and her father stood at the doorway, holding up his camera and smiling at the screen.

“Dad!” Jade cried. “Don't. Take. Pictures! And especially not now,” she added, as she was covering her face and getting out of bed. Frowning slightly, her father left without a word, shutting the door quietly behind him. Jade removed her hands from her face and let an annoyed huff escape her lips. She got dressed quickly, walking downstairs while trying to get her sweater on inside-out. She decided to feast on a piece of bread for breakfast, but stopped when she saw an omelette laid nicely on a clean plate on the dining table. Did Dad make this? I think this is his breakfast, but I guess a bite can't hurt…  And before she knew, she was eating the last of the scrambled egg that had fallen on the table when she ate. That was when her father suddenly jumped out and took a picture of her. Again!

“Will you please stop, Dad.” Jade glared at her father and stood up roughly, pushing her chair back as she snarled at her father with fury.

“I just thought that I could, you know, take some pictures of you enjoying something I cooked. I'm getting old.” he admitted, giving Jade a sad smile.

Jane huffed, rolled her eyes a little and left the house. She didn’t even glance at her father or say goodbye before she left. She shifted her schoolbag on her shoulders and rode her favourite red bike to school.

A few days passed after Jade yelled at her father. She hasn't talked to him for the past few days because of the previous incidents. In fact, she had ignored all the explanations (or sometimes random topics to get her talking) from her father. She would sometimes sit in the living room and watch TV, and her father would walk out the front door, but come back in after a few minutes looking totally baffled and confused. Weird. But she soon shook it off, thinking it was just his way of getting back her attention. She noticed her father didn't continue to take pictures these days as well. Maybe if I keep on ignoring him, he would just forget about taking pictures.

A familiar flash filled her room while she was deep in thought, and she was startled, she jumped in her seat so suddenly. When she realised what happened, she stood up and started to shake with fury, fists balled tightly at her sides and her fingernails digging for flesh in the palm of her hands.

“This is not funny, Dad.” Jade managed through gritted teeth, trying to keep calm, like she would burst any second. This makes her look like a werewolf and trying to control herself to not transform under the full moon. “Seriously. I really hate people taking pictures of me. I really really hate it.” It brings back sad memories…
